“I hate gambling. I do not want it. “There will be no casinos outside of what are existing. I am not granting anything.”
Okada Manila, owned by Japan’s Universal Entertainment, is the new comer to Entertainment City, holding a soft opening for the resort in late 2016. At 44 hectares, the property is by far the biggest in the complex and the rollout of hotels and other facilities is continuing. At its completion of Phase One, Okada will have 994 hotel rooms and operate 500 tables and about 3,000 slots. Its centrepiece is the world’s largest coloured fountain, as well as a giant inner city beach complex, known as “Cove Manila”. Managing Director Steve Wolstenholme spoke to AGB about the progress of the rollout and his optimism about non-gaming opportunities in the Philippines.
Filipinos’ well known love for entertainment means the country’s casinos may see significant upside from their non-gaming attractions if they get the mix right, giving Macau a run for its money when it comes to creating a diversified entertainment hub in Asia. As Tiger Resort Leisure & Entertainment's property in the Philippines begins to take its place on the Manila skyline, the sheer size and scale of the project is becoming apparent. The resort will be the third to open in the Entertainment City gaming hub and will be the biggest so far, on a site of about 44 hectares. The project stems from the vision of Japanese tycoon Kazuo Okada, who has a long association with the Philippines and a long-term faith in its future potential. AGB recently sat down with Tiger president Steve Wolstenholme who provided an update on progress and why he's so enthusiastic.
The Philippine gaming market is expected to be one of the fastest growing in Asia this year, though early signs of cannibalization amongst newly opened resorts has led to some concern the market may not be deep enough to support the planned multi-billion properties.
