Australian Leisure confirms money laundering probe

Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group confirmed to the Australian that federal financial regulator Austrac and the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation are investigating possible money laundering activity at its pubs. A spokesman told the newspaper that the company had fired several staff and barred several customers after an internal investigation. Three fired staff each told the Australian they had been told by supervisors to ignore the suspect activity. The newspaper had alleged that Vietnamese gangs were laundering millions of dollars using the pubs’ gambling machines. The company is a joint venture of the Mathieson family and Woolworths Ltd.
