Bangalore rummy crackdown closes 1,000 clubs

Police have shut down more than 1,000 commercial card clubs in Bangalore as part of a crackdown on gambling. The clubs are licensed to operate card tables alongside sports facilities such as badminton courts and table tennis but police say 90 percent only offer cards, with many involving high-stakes rummy that they say can lead to deadly fights. One club official said that some 15,000 cashiers, dealers and other staff had lost their jobs because of the crackdown but much of the higher stakes activity has moved to hotel rooms and serviced apartments.
