Border town attracting scams

Up to 25 Vietnamese have been arrested and given prison terms in Bavet, a city near the Vietnam border, for holding captive gamblers unable to pay their debts. Vietnamese police say that teenagers and students are being lured across the border with offers of free meals, accommodation and gambling chips. Police on both sides of the border say that loan sharks sometimes hold gamblers captive until relatives pay off their losses. A Bavet police official said about 200 Vietnamese cross the border a day to gamble at the city’s 12 casinos.
