The Philippines Bureau of Immigration may be dealing with the mass deportation of Chinese POGO workers – who face having their passports canceled by their government for their involvement in illegal gambling operations, local media reports.
The moves are the latest attempt by the Chinese government to clamp down on illegal gambling.
Over the weekend, the Chinese embassy revealed it had obtained a list of Chinese nationals working for POGOs.
According to the BI, China’s crackdown on telecommunications-related crimes, including offering to gamble to Chinese citizens entails the cancellation of their passports.
The BI said it is in the process of verifying with the Chinese embassy if their government had indeed canceled the passports of thousands of their citizens.
“This could lead to mass deportation,” said BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval, as Chinese nationals are considered undocumented once their passports are canceled by their government.
Sandoval said the BI would support the Chinese government in deporting those hit with the passport cancellations.
“We would ask for a list of names. That is what we have been doing in the past,” said Sandoval. “They give us a list of their nationals whose passports have been canceled so we could implement the deportation.”
