According to World Lottery Association (WLA) stats on world lottery performance for the first half of this year released last week, global sales have increased 4.6 percent, helped by strong performance in Latin America and Asia Pacific.
Lotteries in the Asia Pacific region saw an increase of 11.1 percent compared with the same period last year. China lotteries in particular had a strong second quarter performance, with the China Sports lottery posting growth of 19.6 percent, and the China Welfare lottery reporting an increase of 13.4 percent. Total China lottery sales reached RMB 149 billion (US$ 24 billion), buoyed by the restructuring of lottery operations, new quick lottery games being introduced in some provinces, and pilot video lottery terminal (VLT) schemes. VLTs are proving popular with sales in the first half reaching RMB 13.7 billion (US$ 2.2 billion), an increase of 35 percent from H1 2012.
