Crown takes Echo fight to Brisbane

James Packer, chairman of Crown Ltd., said his company has been lobbying Queensland for approval to build a casino in Brisbane, a direct challenge to Echo Entertainment Group Ltd.’s proposed $1.3 billion casino resort plan for the state capital where it already operates the Treasury Casino, as state officials will be reluctant to approve two downtown casino projects.  John O’Neill, Echo chairman, meanwhile put the value of the company’s reinvestment plan for The Star casino in Sydney at more than A$1 billion; there too, Crown is challenging Echo’s city monopoly with its own A$1 billion plan. The two are to submit final proposals by June 21 for New South Wales to choose between them.
