Foreign online casinos hurt Taiwanese sports lottery

Local lottery retailers are claiming that the more attractive odds and lighter regulation of foreign online casinos are drawing Taiwanese gamblers away from betting on the Sports Lottery.  Taipei Fubon Bank, which operates the sports lottery, has posted losses of UD $279.7 million over the last five years.  Local experts blame marketing inefficiencies at Taipei Fubon Bank as well as the government’s heavy-handed regulation of the sector.  Taipei Fubon Bank’s license to issue tickets ends at the end of 2013, with local manufacturing firm Adata Technology Co. having been chosen as the new contractor for issuing sports lottery tickets.
