Government official caught in Kathmandu casino raids

Plainclothes police arrested 12 local gamblers in raids on three local casinos in Kathmandu coinciding with the local new year holiday after receiving tips. Nepalis are banned from gambling in the country’s casinos. Those arrested included a government official, Bhawanath Bhattarai, assistant chief district officer for the city’s Lalitpur district. The police targeted the Royale, Anna and Tara casinos but said the casino owners escaped arrest. The police have been pressuing city’s casinos to list their employees and shareholders to weed out local gamblers gaining access with fake identity papers.
