IPL bets seen rising 25 percent

Bets on the new sixth cricket season of the Indian Premier League are expected to reach 400 billion rupees ($7.3 billion), up 25 percent from last year, according to surveys of underground bookies by the Economic Times. Most of the growth is coming from small bets placed by young white collar workers and the bookies generally route their business through Portugal. News reports of arrests of bookies and gamblers are frequent but are not acting as a deterrent.
