Minister says Malaysians ‘morally not ready’ for sports betting

Khairy Jamaluddin, youth and sports minister, said that “the majority of Malaysians are morally not ready for sports betting” in an interview with sports247.my.

Jamaluddin said while legalized sports betting would generate revenue for the government and reduce illegal betting, stricter law enforcement and better prevention would be a better strategy. He said that a number of soccer players had spoken with him after being approached by bookies as they were afraid of filing complaints out of concern for their families’ safety. Prime Minister Najib Razak made an abortive effort to legalize sports betting in 2010.
