A spokesman for the main Opposition party in Sri Lanka, the UNP, has spoken out against James Packer’s proposed casino project, calling it illegal. Dr Harsha de Silva, an economist and spokesperson for the party, questioned Mr Packer’s license to operate
saying that the Government would need to first introduce proper regulation to allow him to do so. He countered that neither conditions for operating had been satisfied, namely that a license to operate be obtained and that the project be contained in a pre-determined geographic area. Dr Harsha also said that he did not understand why Mr Packer was being given tax concessions when the opportunity to open a casino in Sri Lanka should be incentive enough.
