Delhi police arrested three players from the Rajasthan Royals Indian Premier League squad on charges of bet fixing, along with five bookies. Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were arrested at hotels and Shanthakumaran Sreesanth at a friend’s house. The Board of Control for Cricket in India immediately suspended the three. The three are said to have accepted as much as 6 million rupees ($110,000) at a time as they gave pre-arranged signals to bookies in three matches this month and then gave up a large number of runs to the other team to fix spot bets placed by the bookies. The Royals went on to win two of the matches. The signals included the players putting a towel in their waistband. Team owners Raj Kundra and actress Shilpa Shett said the club would assist in the police investigation. Police have gathered evidence from phone taps and exchanges via BlackBerry Messenger and WhatsApp. Another ten bookies, seven in Mumbai and three in Delhi, have also been arrested in connection with the case.
