SkyCity to introduce facial recognition systems

Auckland Mayor Len Brown said the government’s deal with SkyCity Entertainment Ltd. for it to build and operate a NZ$402 million ($311 million) convention center is to include a requirement for the casino operator to use facial recognition systems to screen out known problem gamblers. The system could then be rolled out to other bars and clubs with gambling machines in the city, Brown said. The government and SkyCity face a Sunday deadline to finalize the deal. A new opinion poll of 750 people about the deal by the New Zealand Herald showed that 61.5 percent opposed it while 33.8 percent supported it; a year ago, 57.3 percent supported the idea, while 40.3 percent were opposed.
