States, operators split over betting odds

The Australian Wagering Council, led by SportsBet chief executive Cormac Barry, moved to embrace television industry proposals to forbid commentators from promoting live betting odds during play but continue to allow bookmaker’s ads and sponsored segments during commercial breaks. Sportingbet chief executive Michael Sullivan blamed rival Tom Waterhouse for turning public opinion against the industry.

South Australia meanwhile said it would ban broadcast ads of live betting odds on its own, while other state governments said it was up to the federal government to act, as did Stephen Conroy, federal communications minister.
