Vietnamese singer facing charges over illegal gambling

Proceedings have begun against Kim Tu Long, a well-known traditional singer and actor whose legal name is Hoang Kim Long, for illegal gambling.

Long was one of 27 cardplayers arrested by Vinh Long province police during a raid on gambling den operating on a river barge in June. Of the money seized in the raid, 335 million dong ($16,200) of the 373 million dong and all $1,345 in US currency was attributed to Long. Long claimed that the cash was from two performances and savings he was to use for a property purchase but admitted the bet 900,000 dong on three games. Other gamblers arrested testified they had played with Long several times before and that he usually bet 500,000 dong to 1 million dong a game.
