William Hill enters Australia with Sportingbet buy

 

William Hill, the British bookmaker, completed its $750 million acquisition of Sportingbet’s Australian business. “The Australian business offers us a well-recognized brand, an experienced team and a market-leading position in a highly competitive market,”  said Ralph Topping, chief executive of William Hill. “We have particular skills in those areas of the Australian market that are demonstrating strong structural growth: online, mobile, fixed odds betting and sports betting.” Topping told an interviewer that Australian restrictions on in-play betting and betting on individual elements of a game risk driving gamblers to unlicensed bookies.
