Cotai field of dreams: can they even build and it?

The next trick will be to get them all built and running. Loh Seow Yuen, managing partner at MSS Recruitment in Macau, calculates that the operators will be looking to hire 13,200 people a year between 2014 and 2016. By comparison, Macau employers in total added 13,900 workers last year and there were 6,600 people officially unemployed — including 1,700 former gaming staff — as of March 31, according to government figures. “Labor shortage has always been one of the major issues faced by businesses in Macau,” said Jennifer Liao, managing director at recruiter EvolutionHR. “Given the record low current unemployment rate of 1.9 percent, the next wave of Cotai development will experience manpower challenges both in terms of quality and quantity.” The big question is how flexible the government will be...
